Cotabato City, BARMM – The 2024 Bangsamoro Science and Technology Week (BSTW) officially kicked off today, October 16, at Cotabato State University, Cotabato City, with a grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting led by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of the Bangsamoro Government.

The highly anticipated event, themed “Harnessing Science, Technology, and Innovation: Unlocking Bangsamoro’s Potential for Sustainable Development,” marked the beginning of a two-day celebration of scientific progress and technological innovations aimed at fostering sustainable growth in the region.

The opening ceremony was graced by Minister Engr. Aida M. Silongan, MAPDS, along with Dr. Sema G. Dilna, President of Cotabato State University, MP Suharto Ismael, Chairperson, Committee on Science and Technology, and other key officials from BARMM and MOST. The event attracted a diverse audience, including representatives from the academe, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), researchers, exhibitors, students, local innovators, private industries, and the general public.

In her opening remarks, Minister Silongan emphasized the importance of science and technology in driving the region toward progress and sustainability. “This year’s BSTW serves as a platform to showcase the innovations and advancements that will propel the Bangsamoro region toward greater prosperity. We are committed to empowering local scientists, researchers, students, and entrepreneurs to contribute meaningfully to the growth of our region,” she stated.

The event featured keynote speeches from national and regional leaders, setting the tone for a series of activities designed to engage the community in science and technology initiatives. These included launching activities, technology forums, seminars, exhibits, health research, and many more.

One of the highlights of the opening day was the presentation of grants to deserving students, the presentation of the Bangsamoro Science High School Highlights, and the recognition of MOST Scholars with Latin Honors and international awardees in science competitions. Additionally, Members of Parliament who sponsored the Mujahideen Assistance for Science Education (MASE) and the Transitional Development Impact Fund (TDIF) were recognized. These initiatives underscore MOST-BARMM’s dedication to building a robust workforce in science and technology, which will drive innovation and development in the region.

The first day also featured the 4th BARMM Health Research and Development Forum, and on the second day, the Bangsamoro Region-Wide Science Olympiad will engage students and professionals in scientific discussions and competitions aimed at promoting a culture of innovation within the Bangsamoro community.

As the opening day concluded, attendees expressed excitement for the upcoming recognition and awarding ceremonies, as well as the various workshops and forums planned for the next day. The 2024 BSTW is poised to be a major step forward in highlighting the essential role of science, technology, and innovation in the region’s future.

MOST-BARMM reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the region’s growth through science and technology, envisioning a future where innovation is at the forefront of a resilient and progressive Bangsamoro.
